Drama!

Today in the hub we did things a bit differently - instead of PE, we were treated to some drama!

Can we help teach you the NZ National Anthem?

At our assembly tomorrow we'll be singing the National Anthem and we've been practicing to make sure we sound especially amazing.

We'd like to help you learn the words too by watching this video of us...

Independent Learning during Literacy time

Look at Jacqueline's awesome independent learning from today!

Ariel has been learning English.  Here is a picture that she drew and labelled.  She has been learning the words for her family members, animals and colours!  Go Ariel!  We are all so proud of her learning.

It's our assembly this Friday!

Did you know that on Friday, LH1 will be leading our school assembly?

Every hub in the school will be contributing towards the items but we're very excited to be leading it!

If you'd like to come, it will start at around 9.05am

Joe teaches us how to play Balloon Joining Words

Joe's such a pro at this game that he decided to teach you all how to play.  Click here to play for yourself.

Mums and dads, this is a great game that you can play at home with your children, to help teach them correct grammar.

Kyan's learning about Eating!

Today Kyan wrote "all about what my dinosaur wants to eat when it first woke up".  Kyan knows about being a herbivore and a carnivore and today he learnt about being a omnivore which means "it can eat all the fruits and vegetables and meat".

Kyan is a omnivore - what are you?

What is your pet?

Do you know anyone who doesn't eat meat?  What other name do we call them?  A veg.........?

Welcome inside Learning Hub One!

We're very lucky to enjoy such amazing spaces here at Stonefields School that help us to learn as we do.

For those of you who can't make it in whilst the hub's in action - here's a fun photo for you to explore.

Making Connections in Phonics

We've all been learning lots about letter sounds and how to use this understanding in our writing.  Some of the groups have been robotting to help them break down the sounds in words and some have been looking at words with the same middle and end sounds.  Here are some of the rhyming words we've found.  Can you think of any others?

Being Self-Aware in Writing Time

Today in writing time we talked about being self-aware.  We said that sometimes it's best to collaborate and work with others to share ideas and sometimes it's good to work by ourselves.

Daniel, Dan, Julia and Zoe were really self-aware today in writing!  They all decided to work by themselves while they planned their writing.

Did you collaborate or learn independently in writing today?

Turning the lights off in LH1

This morning when the teachers came into the hub they turned all of the lights on but when we looked at the calendar, Miss Hinge went around and turned them off again.

I wonder why she did that?  Do you know?

Caleb has been self aware

Caleb - you have been demonstrating the learner quality of self-aware the last two sessions of reading. You came to the mat straight away and your ears were ready for listening. What other learner qualities were you showing at reading?

"I was self aware. I was connecting and being determined."

TravelWise

This week at school it has been Travelwise Week!  We've been joining other schools right across New Zealand.

Travelwise encourages "active and sustainable ways to travel to school", including "walking, cycling, public transport, carpooling and even scooting to school".

The hub went for a walk down to the end of the field together to see where we could be dropped off in the mornings.  This could be a great option for parents who need to drive to school as it  would still allow the learners to walk part of the way.

We also used it as an opportunity to talk about safe practice when getting in and out of cars and everyone did a great job listening and sharing their ideas.

Sculpting with Dan, Kyan and Kyle!

What you will need:

Cookie cutters

Playdough

Your hands and fingers

How we did it:

We used the cutters to make the shapes.  We used the bumpy cutter to make the pretend jelly.  We made cherries out of play dough and we rolled the stalks in our fingers and the balls in our hands.

We like making stuff with play dough.  We think our sculptures are good enough to go in the museum. What do you think?

By Kyle, Dan and Kyan!

Home Learning Challenge: Science

This term in science we are learning about different surfaces.  We've been describing how things feel here at school and have been wondering about things at home too.

Here we are finding different surfaces at school:

Could you help me to find some interesting things at home that are smooth and rough, soft and hard and maybe even stretchy?

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Hi everyone,

Emily's been doing lots of amazing learning during reading time.

We've been continuing to improve our re-telling, have been sharing our ideas and opinions and have learnt that authors write stories for a reason.

Here's Emily to tell you more!

If you'd like to listen to someone else re-tell their version of The Ant and the Grasshopper, you can watch this one:

Learning from others

Georgia - We were putting the pieces together and drawing the alphabet. Emily was helping me do stuff. She helped me do the alphabet in lower case.

Emily - We were getting the puzzles and doing the opposites. I like teaching the younger children.

Thursday 9 May 2013

Today we read 'Turtle's Trouble" again and we learnt how to re-tell the story, using a flow diagram.  You can listen to us...

We would like some feedback.  How do you think we did?

Yummy Scrummy Fruit

With winter fast approaching we're noticing more sniffs and sneezes in the hub.  We really encourage the learners to come to school with fruit each day as it's choc full of good vitamins and energy.

Thanks to all of you who support this - it's awesome to see so many amazing and healthy lunches (we get quite jealous!)

Fun in Feed and Read

This week in Feed and Read we have been watching  Big Cook Little Cook.

During this term we are going to be learning all about materials and how different materials change when they are heated or cooled.

Can you make some of the recipes?

Ariel's new vocabulary learning!

Ariel you chose to explore puppets for your break through this term and you learnt the word 'pink' in reading today. What great connecting! You are learning so much english everyday. We are very proud of you, well done.

Helping with Reading at Home...

Hi everyone,

We hope you've all come back after the break having managed some quality time with the kids - it's been such a treat having them back again!

I've stumbled across this website and thought you might be interested.  Oxford Owl has a range of ideas to help with reading and literacy learning at home - many of them don't even require a computer.  If you do decide to try some at home, please leave a comment and let the other parents know how you got on - it's always nice to know which ones worked well, which ones you tweaked, and which, if any, to avoid.

If you'd like, there's a neat looking Kids' Barn for them to explore with some more online games.

WALHT: Plan our writing

In writing one of the groups has been focused today on planning their writing, by talking, drawing and writing plans.

Here's Charlie S, Dan and Kate to tell you more...

Writing - Describe my face.

We looked at ourselves in the mirror and thought of words to describe our face.  Next we are going to plan our writing and in our books.
